What is the Difference Between Non-Unique and Unique Tracking on Google Analytics?

We have lots of clients asking us what terminology means on websites analytics tools, so we thought we’d demystify some of it for you.  

 

Before we start the article, here are a few handy words to understand: 

Event: The user interaction and or activity with a web page. 

View: The user visiting a web page.  

Unique: A distinct user interaction with a web page at least once during a reporting period.  

Non-Unique: A user interaction during a reporting period. 

 

If you visit www.phew.org.uk 10 times in a day, it is recorded as one unique visitor and 10 visits. If you even refresh a page 10 times, it is counted as 10 visits, one unique visitor. 

Event: The user interaction and or activity with a web page. 

View: The user visiting a web page. 

Below is an overview of an Events example. 

This graph shows that 2,109 unique user events happened on this website within the chosen period, this means that 4,349 were reoccurring users. Total Events shows both Unique and Non-Unique user interactions. 

Below is an overview of a Views example. 

This graph shows that 4,274 unique page views happened on this website within the chosen period, this means that 1,534 were reoccurring users. Pageviews show the total of both Unique and Non-Unique Pageviews.
